Danny Ings described himself as in complete shock, as England boss Roy Hodgson handed the Liverpool striker his first senior national team call-up on Thursday afternoon.

The selection caps a magical few months for Ings, with him having made his move from Burnley to Liverpool, scored his first goal in a Red shirt and now being in the England squad.

He'll link up with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart and co; aswell as club mates James Milner, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne, as the Three Lions prepare for their final two European Qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania.

Striker in shock at call-up

When asked to describe his feelings following the announcement, Ings told the media that he was "in shock" at having got the nod, adding that it "means so much" to both him and his family, and that he hopes he can "build on" from this.

Despite Ings being surprised, one group that won't be is the Liverpool fans. They've quickly taken to their new striker on L4, with his hard-workrate and cool finishing lending comparisons to former player Dirk Kuyt. These were made even more prominent after he snatched his first two goals for the club in a short space of time, netting against Norwich City and Carlisle United.

Ings has fought off tough competition to make the 23

However, there was huge competition for places, with attackers such as Rooney, Jamie Vardy, Theo Walcott, Harry Kane, Scott Sinclair, Saido Berahino and Daniel Sturridge all having scored for their clubs recently.

It was perhaps partly due to this, that Ings was so taken aback by being picked, revealing that he was "over the moon" as he "didn't expect this at all", and had already booked a trip down south to see family members over the break.

He'll certainly have to re-arrange those plans now, and hope to persuade Roy Hodgson that making him cancel them was the right choice.
