Joe Allen's 90th minute volley rescued a deserved point for Liverpool in an enthralling 3-3 draw with league leaders Arsenal at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Roberto Firmino opened the scoring for the hosts after just nine minutes but Aaron Ramsey drew his side level just four minutes later, beating Simon Mignolet at his near post.

Firmino got his second of the game with a stunning curling strike that evaded Petr Cech's outstretched left hand to find the top corner, but again the Reds' lead lasted just six minutes as Olivier Giroud was first to Ramsey's corner to flick it beyond Mignolet at the near post.

After half-time allowed both teams some respite from a one-hundred-miles-per-hour first 45 minutes, Giroud registered his own brace - turning on a sixpence inside the box and finding the bottom corner with a superb strike.

Liverpool pushed for an equaliser throughout the remainder of the second-half though they were wary of the threat Arsenal retained on the counter-attack.

Just as it looked like the Gunners would return to London with a precious three points, the home side rounded off an encapsulating encounter with a stoppage-time equaliser.

Allen ran onto substitute Christian Benteke's headed knockdown to rifle past Cech and send manager Jürgen Klopp sprinting down the touchline in passionate delight.

Fast-paced start sets the tone for pulsating affair

Klopp welcomed back three players from injury, reducing their list of absentees to nine, as Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Mamadou Sakho all returned from foot, hamstring and knee injuries respectively.

The German also chose to bench Benteke in favour of starting Firmino up top, as Steven Caulker - who signed for the Reds on loan for the rest of the season earlier in the week - took up a place on the substitutes bench along with goalkeeper Danny Ward, who replaced Adam Bogdan as back-up custodian after being recalled from his loan spell with Aberdeen.

Meanwhile, Arsenal made just the one change to their last starting eleven in the Premier League, Joel Campbell starting in place of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

It took very little time for the clash to spark into life as Liverpool looked lively from the offset, pressing and harrying their opponents deep into their own half.

That kind of energy and enthusiasm only took 10 minutes to pay off as Arsenal failed to clear from a corner. Liverpool kept the ball alive and after Cech palmed Emre Can's powerful drive into the feet of Firmino inside the area, the Brazilian controlled before firing a low left-footed shot through Laurent Koscielny's legs to beat Cech from 12-yards.

The home crowd, passionately roaring their team on, would have expected Klopp's charges to kick on as they searched for a second straight from the kick-off - but their lead lasted just four minutes.

In what was virtually Arsenal's attack of the game, Campbell slipped in Ramsey behind Sakho - who was struggling with a head injury after an aerial clash with Giroud seconds earlier - and Kolo Touré wasn't quick enough to come across and cover as Ramsey fired hard and low past Mignolet at his near post.

Reds restore the lead only to lose it again within six minutes

It did little to dampen Liverpool's spirits, however, as they charged forward in search of another goal to restore their lead, and they were well rewarded for their good approach play and well organised pressing when Firmino scored a second after 20 minutes.

Henderson's industrious pressing forced Arsenal into mistakes at the back and after the hosts squeezed the ball into Milner, he found Firmino in space on the edge of the area and within seconds, he curled an exquisite shot over Cech and into the top corner.

But in what was a breathless first half-an-hour, it wasn't long before the Londoners looked to strike level a second time. Ramsey almost scored a brace of his own as he was quicker to Giroud's flick on than Mignolet, but though he looped his shot over the Belgian, Sakho was on hand to head clear off the line.

Then, from the resulting corner kick, Arsene Wenger's men made it 2-2. The Reds failed to leave a man on the near post and paid the consequence as Giroud was there to get a slight flick on Ramsey's whipped delivery and beat Mignolet for another quickfire equaliser.

And there should have been a fifth goal before the half-hour after yet more good build-up from the away side, but after Campbell slipped Theo Walcott into space at the byline, somehow his low cross wasn't turned in by Giroud who managed to divert it backwards with the goal gaping.

That miss allowed Liverpool to recollect, althought it was the away team who looked the more likely to score again before the break, Walcott's shot deflecting over from Sakho's block after the Englishman found himself in a dangerous position.

Suddenly, on the stroke of half-time - Firmino almost registered a first-half hattrick as he swivelled in the box and fired goalwards, but his shot flicked off the top of the crossbar to leave the two sides level at the interval.

But the scintillating tempo continued straight from the start of the second-half as Mesut Özil's glorious pass picked out Campbell at the back post, but he couldn't keep his first-time effort down in front of the away fans.

Immediately up the other end, the unmarked Alberto Moreno almost made him pay for his miss - but though he walked on to Firmino's pass - the ball bounced unkindly for him as he arched his leg and he could only swipe it high and wide from a promising position.

The Spanish left-back's poor effort proved costly as Giroud gave Arsenal the lead for the first time in the 55th minute. The ball fell nicely for the Frenchman after Hector Bellerin's run led to Campbell's pass, which deflected into Giroud's path.

It was there that the striker showed his class, turning away from a lumbering Touré and powering a left-footed effort past a helpless Mignolet for his second of the game.

From there on in, the league leaders looked on course for the three points - largely soaking up the pressure which Klopp and co. threw at them before the Reds boss turned to his substitutes to make an impact, bringing on Benteke in favour of Milner.

They soon began to look more dangerous as they became more and more desperate for another goal. They had a few half-chances with one from Lallana the pick of the bunch, but he was closed down well by Per Mertesacker after the attacking midfielder threatened to run onto a loose ball and score.

Klopp even went as far to throw Caulker, a natural centre-back, up-front off of the bench - bringing him on for Lallana and switching to a 4-4-2 with the aim of getting long balls into Caulker and Benteke as they looked for an equaliser in the dying stages.

And that approach worked to perfection, as Benteke got on the end of Henderson's simple high ball into the box to nod it into Allen's path and he happily answer Liverpool's prayers - stroking his first-time shot into the bottom corner for a huge point which keeps his side from falling six points adrift of fourth place.
