Liverpool have confirmed that goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has signed a five-year contract that will run to the end of the 2020-2021 season.

The 27-year-old signed a £9 million deal to join the Reds from Sunderland in 2013 and has been the first-choice at Anfield ever since.

The Belgium international is currently midway through his third season with the club and has made 122 appearances to this point, having ended 2015 with more clean sheets than any other custodian in the Barclays Premier League, with 15.

Despite regularly coming under criticism for costly errors, Reds boss Jürgen Klopp is clearly putting his faith in Mignolet to prove his doubters wrong.

Speaking after putting pen-to-paper, the 'keeper declared himslef "very pleased" to be a part of the club "for a long future" and said he's "happy to commit" his future to the club.

Mignolet still the favourite of Reds' goalkeeping options

Adam Bogdan, who is the back-up to Mignolet, got the start against Watford a few weeks ago because of an injury to the starting goalkeeper.

But the Hungarian didn't take his chance and gave up a goal early as they eventually lost 3-0 at Vicarage Road. Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney destroyed defenders Mamadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel, while Bogdan did not do much to help once Watford put a shot on goal.

Mignolet passed his fitness test before the teams Boxing Day clash with Leicester City, and coming off a hamstring injury, recorded another clean sheet - before another 1-0 win at Sunderland ended the Reds' year on a positive with Mignolet claiming another shut-out.

The 6ft 4ins shot-stopper has kept 30 clean sheets in the Premier League since making his debut for Liverpool in 2013, which is the second most behind Joe Hart of Manchester City, who has 37 clean sheets in that time.

Despite signing a new deal, it is expected that Danny Ward - recently recalled from a loan spell with Aberdeen - has been invited by Klopp to challenge for the No.1 spot - with Mignolet still splitting opinion amongst supporters with inconsistent recent displays.

What is next for Mignolet and co?

Mignolet and Liverpool next face Norwich City in the league this Saturday, coming off a 1-0 loss against Manchester United just a few days ago.

Wayne Rooney's 78th minute strike, which Mignolet was powerless to stop, was enough to deny Liverpool the three points and keep them in ninth with just 31 points and eight wins from 22 games.
