Second half goals from Samir Nasri and Pablo Zabaleta secured a 2-0 win over Roma and a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Neither side defended very well in the first half and this led to chances at both ends. Roma had the opening opportunity after just five minutes when left back Holebas found himself in behind the City defence, on the left, after a floated ball over the top. The Greek defender cut back in on his right foot where Joe Hart sprawled himself at the defender's feet to snuff out the chance.

City were then nearly caught on the break as former Arsenal man Gervinho broke away down the right by himself before getting in the box and driving one low across goal, which Hart did well to get down to and turn around the post. The visitors' first real chance came when Man City were patient down the right side. Nasri squared to Fernandinhio, who slid James Milner in down the right side of the box, but his effort was snuffed out at the near post by Roma keeper De Sanctis.

City had a more clear-cut opening just before half time when Nasri was involved in the build up once more as he got to the right byline and pulled the ball back for Edin Dzeko who miss-hit right footed the ball over from only six yards out.

The first major incident of the second half was the deadlock being broken courtesy of Nasri. The French winger was allowed to control a long ball on the left hand side and was given space to move inside which he did before unleashing a powerful right foot shot that clipped in off the inside of the keepers near post to send the City fans wild.

Roma nearly equalized just five minutes later though and in similar fashion to how they'd just conceded. Central midfielder Nainggolan was given the space to get the ball under control in the centre 30 yards out and in the blink of an eye released a powerful right foot effort which Hart had to tip over two handed.

The hosts got two really golden chances within a minute of each other 20 minutes from time. Central defender Manolas first had his ten yard header from a right footed, right wing costless kick tipped onto the right post by Hart at full stretch. Then from the following corner from the right Hart went for it but missed it and at the back post Manolas flicked it towards goal but Martin Demichelis on the line managed to scramble the ball away.

Then with just five minutes City wrapped up their place in the knockout stages through Zabaleta. Once again the Roma defence let a City player get out of a tight spot down the left, this time Jovetic who played the ball to Nasri who flicked the ball inside for his advancing full back who first time right footed steered the ball into the bottom left corner.
