Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has spoken of his satisfaction with his side's thumping 5-0 victory at home to Newcastle, and is hopeful that City can carry their good form into their Champions League clash with Catalan giants Barcelona.

The win, courtesy of Chelsea's draw with Burnley, has closed the gap at the top of the Premier League table to just five points with twelve games still to play, and the Chilean is looking to enter the Champions League knockouts with similar attacking intent.

"It is better because last year we arrived in February after we played 18 games in December and January, of those 18 we won 16 and drew two," he said.

"I think we arrived not in our best moment. There was also the sending off of Martin Demichelis. This year we played less games in January. We will try to continue in the Champions League.

"All the games are different but we are going to try from the beginning as we did today to be an aggressive team and to try and score goals.

"Maybe it is not a normal game because it is 180 minutes, so you must try to score but try not concede. But on Tuesday I am sure you will see our team trying to play in the same way."

Pellegrini also praised the performances of David Silva and Edin Džeko, the pair creating two goals and scoring one respectively.

"For Edin it is very important," he noted. "Maybe one of the things that happened in January was that Edin was just returning from a long injury and Sergio [Agüero] also.

"Both of them, as they have minutes, will return to their normal performance. Edin not only scored but worked very well the whole game.

"I think David has already improved a lot. In the last game against Stoke he came back from an injury in his knee.

"Maybe he was not playing 100 per cent a few weeks ago but when he is 100 per cent he always makes a difference.

"It is always very important for David and the team to have him in good condition."
