It was a big summer for Manchester City after the two disappointing summers previously with a combined total of £157.2million spent on players that really didn’t bring anything different to their squad. They spent big again this summer with £87.5million pounds spent on five players and with what looks to be another big summer around the corner, we will look back at how the signings of 2014-15 faired throughout the campaign.

Fernando - £12million

Manuel Pellegrini's first signing of the summer was the Brazilian midfielder Fernando, and he was mainly brought in to help partner fellow compatriot Fernandinho as they began to form a good partnership with each other at the beginning of the season with Fernando mainly making substitute appearances.

His presence began to become more and more frequent, however injury saw him only make two appearances between February and April before making his return in 2-0 victory over West Ham.

The Brazilian missed the final two matches of the season but the 27-year-old had already made his contribution with 29 appearances with two goals and two assists as well as having improved defensively as the campaign has continued; if he can keep up that sort of form going into the next season it could be a very strong one for Fernando, who had a shaky start but continues to develop in the blue half of Manchester.

Bacary Sagna - Free

Bacary Sagna for many years has been touted as one of the most reliable and the best full-backs and this summer he joined numerous faces who made the switch from the Emirates to the Etihad.

However it hasn’t been the move that the Frenchman would have hoped for making just 14 appearances throughout the whole campaign and just nine in the league.  His role has been seriously restricted with the continued excellence of first-choice right-back Pablo Zabaleta and his only appearances have come when the Argentine has been absent.

The 32-year-old played his final game of the season in their 2-1 away defeat to Crystal Palace on the 6th of April and with rumours of a possible move away after just a season he could have well played his final match in a City shirt. Despite these rumours, it is widely believed that he is still one of the best full-backs in the league and has enough ability to fight for a starting position with Zaba, who has periods of inconsistency mixed with individual brilliance on the right-hand side of City's defence.

Willy Caballero - £6million

Another player that has had restricted opportunities due to the excellence of a team-mate is goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

One of the main concerns last season for Pellegrini was the amount of mistakes that current number one Joe Hart made and with no real competition to challenge him for his jersey, the Chilean stepped up the stakes bringing the capable keeper Caballero from former La Liga club Malaga.

His tactic seems to have worked as the 33-year-old has only made just the two appearances throughout the campaign and didn’t really impresse conceding two in the 4-2 victory over Hull City and then another 2 in the narrow 3-2 victory over Sunderland.

Despite the lack of action his presence seems to have had a profound effect on Hart’s performances as he re-established as one of the best 'keepers in the league and Pellegrini will want this continue and if Hart does have another dip in form he will know that Caballero can be called upon to fill the void.

Eliaquim Mangala - £32million

With the continued injury problems of star centre-back Vincent Kompany in the previous season, Pellegrini decided to invest in someone that could fill the Belgian’s boots if absent and he decided to spend big with the £32m transfer of Mangala.

The 24-year-old was touted as one of the hottest young prospects in European football during his time at Portuguese giants FC Porto but it took a while to show what he could do at the Etihad when he made his debut in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea and managed to keep Diego Costa quiet who had been firing up the league to that point.

There was slight blip through October up to December where Eliaqium was playing every other game but after that he played consistently throughout the rest of the season. There was quite a few performances were he looked very shaky with the eventual 4-2 win over Hull one that stands out, but overall in his 31 appearances he proved a solid asset to the squad and can only improve which will be a big boost to City with Kompany not getting any younger.

Wilfried Bony - £28million

Sergio Agüero was on-fire at the beginning of the season but with an unfortunate injury sustained in the early stages of their 1-0 victory over Everton at the beginning of December and with no knowledge how long the Argentine would be absent, Pellegrini was on the hunt for another striker to fill a potential void.

Thankfully Aguero wasn’t absent for too long but City didn’t take the risk and swooped in for Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony, the striker had impressed throughout his time at The Swans and had already scored nine goals during the campaign before his transfer from south Wales.

The African Cup of Nations tournament meant that he did not make his full debut until the end of February in the 5-0 victory over Newcastle. He scored his first goal in their 3-0 home victory against West Brom and then scored his second and final goal in the 4-2 victory against his former side Swansea.

Overall Bony made only just twelve appearances, most of them coming in substitute cameos - some may have thought that he should have made more of a contribution but with a whole pre-season under his belt there is no doubt that the 26-year-old will make much more of a combination in the 2015-16 season, partnering Aguero up-top, which could be a handful to deal with for opposition defences.
