Manchester City surrendered a one goal lead to lose 2-1 against Juventus in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening, with Alvaro Morata's late winner proving the difference.

A Giorgio Chiellini own-goal had given the Citizens a lead just on the hour mark, but the Old Lady came back stronger, with Morata netting the second after Mario Mandzukic had equalised.

Dreary opening

Paul Pogba was always going to be a man for City to look out for, and he thought he'd opened the scoring after just 10 minutes. Alvaro Morata challenged Joe Hart for a ball in the area, and it fell for Pogba to nod in, however the aforementioned striker had been in an offside position.

Involved again minutes later, Pogba drew a foul from around 30 yards out, which allowed Stefano Sturaro to test Hart. The set-piece bounced just in front of the Englishman, who gathered at the first attempt.

The hosts did attempt to gain some momentum going forward themselves, with Fernandinho striking wide from distance, however it was certainly a tentative start to their European campaign in the first half.

Juan Cuadrado, on loan at the Serie A side from City's Premier League rivals Chelsea, was enjoying some freedom down the right wing, and put the ball just wide minutes before Wilfried Bony spooned a left-footed effort wide.

The half-time whistle came soon after, and Manuel Pellegrini's team talk didn't seem to have worked, with Juventus coming out much the better after the interval.

City take a shock lead

Getting at City from the whistle, they had the Premier League leaders penned back into their own half, which made it even more surprising when City took the lead on the hour mark.

Scoring against last year's Champions League finalists was always going to take a little luck, however you may argue that the goal fell into the 'illegal' bracket.

Climing all over the back of Giorgio Chiellini from a corner, City captain Vincent Kompany did enough to distract the Italian, who unintentionally headed back into his own net.

The game needed a goal, and it picked up afterwards, with Hart at a stretch to block Sturaro's shot, before Eliaquim Mangala slid in bravely to block the rebound.

Juventus fight back to take all three points

Hart couldn't do anything about the next Juve chance though, as Mario Mandzukic levelled up the game just seven minutes after his side had gone behind.

Pogba was given too much space from range, and floated a superb pass into the box, leaving Hart stranded as Manzukic's flick took the ball straight into the bottom right hand corner.

Pellegrini reacted quickly, bringing on Kevin De Bruyne for Raheem Sterling, whilst Nicolas Otamendi replaced the struggling Kopmany. However, it didn't pay off - with Juventus scoring again minutes later.

A bouncing ball fortuitously found it's way to Alvaro Morata 20 yards out, and he took no time in striking it with his first touch, perfectly past Joe Hart as his far post. Sergio Aguero entered the fray, hastily so with it at first appearing that Jesus Navas would come on, before the second goal.

Yaya Toure, who had taken up the captaincy role after Kompany went off, went closest to equalising in the final minutes, forcing Gianluigi Buffon into a fingertip save with his curling effort. It just wasn't enough, and not enough for City, as they finished 2-1 losers.

A huge European blow to the Citizens after such a bright start to the Premier League season, but they've still got 15 more points to play for.
