Manchester United’s long-term summer transfer target, Arturo Vidal has near enough confirmed that the Chilean will be staying at Juventus this year. The midfielder in question tweeted several hours “Siamo pronti per tornare al 100% forza Juve!!!!!” which translates to “We are ready to get back to 100% strength Juve !!!!!”.

Manchester United have been in need of a central midfielder for several years now and manager Louis Van Gaal had appeared to identify Vidal, as the man he believes would help fix all of Manchester United’s midfield issues/ Or at least help the side take a very big step towards doing so. Despite the clubs success in the last couple of years, including winning the Premier League just over one season ago in Sir Alex Fergusons last ever season as a manager, the Manchester United central midfield had been in question for a couple of seasons now. An ageing Paul Scholes, Darran Gibson, Tom Cleverley, Michael Carrick and Anderson, hardly strikes fear into the hearts of opposition teams. But under Sir Alex, Manchester United always managed to drag his team across the line, whether it was through mind games, fear factor or getting one player to play above and beyond and carry the weaker the players. Examples; Ronaldo when Manchester United won the Champions League in 2008, Rooney after Ronaldo joined Real Madrid and Robin Van Persie in Sir Alex’s last ever season.

But Manchester United needed a central midfielder this year to compliment Ander Herrera who joined from Bilbao, as Manchester United have no form of ‘holding’ midfielder. However the Manchester club were unable to push through the deal and the Chilean has confirmed via his personal twitter account he will be staying at Juventus.

A question that the majority of Manchester United fans will be asking themselves now is this, who are the club going to bring in with just three days left in the transfer market. With Cleverley and Kagawa seemingly on the way out, they need to sign for depth if nothing else. But the reality a first team player is also needed in central midfield. The recent purchase of Di Maria shows that Manchester United can sign big name players, but that still does not mean they will be able to sign a world class central midfielder.

It is plausible that Manchester United should go in for Kevin Strootman, from Roma. Who manager Louis Van Gaal is a big fan of and rates the Dutch midfielder very highly. However he is currently side lined with a major injury and it is extremely risky signing a player coming back from injury. A name that has been thrown about an awful lot and linked to the Manchester club, is Sporting Lisbon central midfielder William Carvalho he is regarded as the next big thing in Portugal. A ‘power house’ of a central midfielder, much like the Yaya Toure mould. Although there is no suggestion Carvalho is as good or will ever be as good as Yaya Toure is for Manchester City, the Lisbon central midfielder will be exactly what Manchester United need. They have recently got themselves a very good playmaker in Ander Herrera, but they have no midfielder who can win duels in the air and win tackles, even not minding getting into physical challenges.

It does appear at the moment that Daley Blind is favourite to be signed by Manchester United, which is a very big downgrade from the Chilean Arturo Vidal. But Van Gaal has a very high opinion of the Ajax man, so if anyone is able to get the best out of him, it would be Van Gaal.
