It has been confirmed from numerous sources that Mats Hummels, was in fact one of Louis Van Gaal's targets. The Manchester United manager had instructed vice-chairman Ed Woodward his desire to sign the strong centre back.

The Borussia Dortmund captain had allegedly stripped the release clause that was offered to him two years ago. Hummels wanted to commit himself to Dortmund, and his intent is clear that he wanted to be loyal to his club.

Man Utd had a reported £20 million fee rejected, and a separate deal involving Shinji Kagawa was also unsuccessful. Hummels current contract ends in 2017 and I am sure he will commit further to Dortmund by renewing his contract with the German outfit.

Loyalty is often a hidden attribute, when it comes to modern day footballers. Hummels would have undoubtedly been a fantastic addition to the Manchester United Squad. It is refreshing to read that not all players are motivated by big money deals.
