Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney thinks that they can win the Premier League despite being 8 points behind leaders Chelsea.

Rooney, England Captain, has played a part in 9 goals in 12 Premier League appearances this season, scoring 6 and assisting 3.

After winning their sixth game in a row on Sunday against historic rivals Liverpool, in which Rooney scored in, the 29-year-old spoke of the ability to win games despite being dominated as key to winning the title.

"We have to believe we can win the title," he said. "We are eight points behind and coming into a busy period. If we can win our games and the others have one bad result, then there is nothing there."

United became the first team to win 6 games in a row with their emphatic 3-0 win on Sunday and in that run they have scraped victories over Arsenal and Southampton, being dominated by the opposite side on both occasions. Rooney believes that winning as the poorer side is a sign of Champions and is reminiscent of what they did two years ago when United won their 20th title.

"We have to keep winning our games, hopefully get back to the top, and you never know. We won the league two years ago and we weren't great in a lot of those games but we got the results.

"We have shown a great resilience this season. Some of the games haven't gone the way we would like but we are winning them and that is a great quality to have.

"We have been here before but we have a lot of new players and this is where the experience of myself, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher can rub off on the other players," he added.

Louis van Gaal has spoken very highly of Rooney, praising his work ethic and his maturity in his role as captain, and Rooney believes that the Dutch manager has an 'aura' which rubs off on the side and creates a winning mentality.

"When things weren't going great for us earlier on in the season, he knew what he was doing, he knew the form would come back and that we would win games," Rooney said.

"There was no panic. He [van Gaal] stayed calm because he has been through it all before."

Manchester United's next game is away to Aston Villa on Saturday where they could reduce Chelsea's lead over them by 5 points with the Blues playing on Monday.
