Manchester United have pulled out of the race to sign Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne.

The Guardian report that the Reds are no longer interested in the right-back despite pressing needs for one at Old Trafford.

Man United scouted the defender earlier this season and are aware that his contract runs out next year, according to Press Association Sport.

Manchester United no longer interested in Clyne

Liverpool are the sole interested club in Clyne now after they had a £10 million bid rejected on Wednesday. Brendan Rodgers is looking for a new right-back to replace the outgoing Glen Johnson, released by the club.

Despite a first rejection, it is believed that the Premier League club will follow it up with a second, higher bid as they look to prise him away from St. Mary's before he signs a new deal.

Liverpool have Clyne bid rejected

Southampton Director of Football, Les Reed sounded positive about Clyne's future at the club saying "at the moment the signs are good.”

Clyne back this up yesterday, hinting that he might sign a new contract at the club, “As long as you’re playing well for your club and you’re doing ever so well in the Premier League then, yeah, you’ll get a chance, regardless of whether you’re in a top team or not,”

He added: “But Southampton’s pushing up, so why can’t we be a top team?”

Press Association Sport understand that despite rivals Liverpool being interested and previous interest in the England right-back, Manchester United will no longer be in the bidding process for him.
