With United having already signed Memphis Depay and already being linked with world-class midfielders such as Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ilkay Gündogan, speculation regarding reinforcements in defence have gone cold.

After deciding against pursuing Southampton's defender, Nathaniel Clyne, Manchester United will still be looking to reinforce their right-back area.

With Antonio Valencia still adapting to his new-found position, as well as beginning to age, Rafael cannot be depended on after an injury ravaged past 18 months.

But who else is there for United to pursue?

Dani Alves

If United want a short-term solution to their right-back position, there's no better option than Dani Alves. The Barcelona is out of contract this summer, and could be signed on a free-transfer.

Alves has easily been one of the best players in his positions in the last decade, and at 32, he would offer the side a lot of experience, especially with the Champions League looming.

He offers pace and power going forward, and would be a good supplier of assists as well as being able to chip in with a goal now and then.

Alves is set to make a decision on his future after Barcelona's Champions League final against Juventus, but surely if he was to stay he would've signed the contract offered to him by now.

Before Alves joined Barcelona, he was close to signing for a British club, as Liverpool and Chelsea were vying for his signature. The Brazilian no doubt fancies a move to England, but will it be to Old Trafford?

Dani Carvajal

12 months ago, after winning a Champions League title, thinking about a possible move away from the Bernabeau for Carvajal seemed improbable. However, with the Spanish club confirming the signing of Danilo from Porto, Carvajal could find himself on the outs.

Carvajal grew up at Madrid, but he left for Bayer Leverkusen to get more first-team action. When he came back to the Bernabeu and cemented a first-team place ahead of Arbeloa, he may feel slightly betrayed his club have signed another right-back.

Like Alves, the Spanish defender is quick and powerful. He'd be a great outlet for the Red Devils in attack, but he's also defensively sound.

Carvajal is only 23, which could see him stay at Old Trafford for a long time and an attractive aspect of joining United would be the slowly growing Spanish clique United have of Valdes, De Gea, Mata and Herrera.

Seamus Coleman

Everton had a bit of a nothing season. Honestly, they weren't very impressive but Coleman was still a shining light considering the disappointing season.

Coleman played 34 times for Everton this season, making two assists and scoring three goals. The 26-year-old is going to reach his peak in his coming years, but he must have ambitions of winning silverware in his career and playing in the Champions League.

United can offer that to him. He's an intelligent defender, he uses the ball well and he's a fantastic crosser of the ball.

Compared to the previous two options, Coleman has one advantage, he plays in the Premier League. There wouldn't be any expectation for Coleman to need a season to adapt to the league, however he may have to adapt to the size of the club.

This most likely wouldn't faze the likes of Alves and Carvajal who already play for Spanish powerhouses.
