Manchester United right-back Rafael Da Silva has joined Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais.

Rafael leaves United after seven years

The Brazilian had been at United since his 18th birthday, when he and his twin brother Fabio Da Silva moved to the club from Fluminise in January 2008.

Fee for Rafael around 3 million euros, considered very cheap

Ligue 1 runners up Lyon (OL) have paid in the ballpark of £2million for Rafael, considered a bargain for a player of his quality.

Rafael had been a key part of the United side which won their 20th Premier League title in the 2012/13 season but has been deemed surplus to requirements under Louis van Gaal.

Right-back struggled with injuries under van Gaal

Having had such a brilliant season the right-back struggled to make an impact under both van Gaal and his predecessor David Moyes with the two seasons full of injuries for him.

Now, the 25-year-old has another chance in Europe with Lyon ready to challenge Paris-Saint Germain for the French title, with sought after forward Alexandre Lacazette staying at the club for at least one more season.

Rafael's inevitable departure from United has been greeted with a great sadness amongst the support. Despite only joining the club at 18, Rafael knew what it meant to be a Manchester United player and frequently showed that determination and passion, the desire to be at the club.

Exit was inevitable after Darmian signing

Matteo Darmian was signed for £12.5million pounds in early July by United as Rafael's replacement while Antonio Valencia trumped the Brazilian to the first team right-back slot last year.

Rafael was in the final year of his contract at United and with the club having no intention to renew said contract, it was the best option in terms of career enhancement for him to move on to pastures new.
