Manchester United got off to a good start in their Champions League qualifier against Club Brugge, as they beat them 3-1 at Old Trafford thanks to a Memphis Depay brace and a goal from Marouane Fellaini, but what did we learn?

Bastian Schweinsteiger needs to start

Bastian Schweinsteiger came on at half-time against Brugge and you could see the momentum of the game change in the second half in United's favour. Louis van Gaal is trying to build Schweinsteiger's fitness up, but sooner rather than later Schweinsteiger has to start so United can get control of the game for the very start.

Schweinsteiger's experience is crucial for the side as United have missed someone of his stature to be in the midfield for years, which they now have which is great for the club and the fans.

Depay is fantastic

Memphis Depay showed the world what he was capable of on Tuesday night with two fantastic goals and a great assist for Marouane Fellaini's goal. So far in his short career at United, Depay has been criticised for not doing performing to the best of his abilities - even though he only played two competitive fixtures before the Champions League qualifier. It's clear to see, if you play him on the left wing he can cause some serious damage to opposing sides.

It's now a question of if Depay can carry on his impressive form, which you can know one thing for sure - he will not lack any confidence to try the unexpected and last night will only give him more confidence to push on to bigger and better things.

Blind continues to well in the centre-back role

Many United fans were very concerned that Daley Blind was going to be playing in the left centre back role at the start of the season, but so far he has not put a foot wrong and looks really solid there. You can see why van Gaal would use in him in that role as he reads the game very well and has a good passing range, which is one of the things that the Dutchman admires a lot from his defenders.

Blind may not be the fastest defender by any means, or the tallest. But with the constant displays he's been putting in so far, it's encouraging to see the versatility he possesses to fit in where required for United.

Smalling has developed into a leader

Since last November when Chris Smalling received a red card in the Manchester derby, he has begun to flourish and really step as a player. Smalling commands the back-four, which is fantastic to see and there are starting to a few people comparing Smalling's performances with that of Rio Ferdinand's - which is not far from the truth as Smalling has been immense and really looks like a great defender now.

Against Brugge you could see Smalling's improvement as he just pushed off any challenges from their strikers and came away with the ball, which was very impressive to see all-round from a man who continues to improve at the highest level.

Hernandez has still has a future at United

Javier Hernandez came on as a substitute against Club Brugge and looked like he had a point to prove as he seemed sharp, and with Wayne Rooney needing help up front Hernandez can be a good option from the substitutes' bench. One area where the Red Devils need strength, is in attack - where they are severely lacking pace up-top.

In Hernandez, they have an exciting player who can stretch defences but they also need more for sure. It had been reported all summer long that Hernandez would be let go, but it seems as though van Gaal is willing to give him an opportunity to prove his worth - time will tell.
