Louis van Gaal has hailed Manchester United's defensive organisation and his captain Wayne Rooney as they won 4-0 in style against Club Brugge.

Rooney scored a superb hattrick in the second leg of Man United's qualifier having had a ten-game goal-drought in a United shirt. However, despite looking far off his usual self in the start of the season, Van Gaal says that he never worried about Rooney because he "has the best mentality that you can imagine."

Van Gaal always knew Rooney would come back

Now United captain and England captain, Rooney has often come back from poor periods in his career but a ten-game goal drought was the worst in seven years but "players with that level [mentality] shall always come back."

Van Gaal says that Rooney, who had already netted his hattrick, "was very generous to give the penalty to Chica [Javier Hernandez]" but shook his head when he mentioned that Hernandez slipped and missed it.

United were very organised, says Van Gaal

On United's overall performance, Van Gaal said United "were very organised" and "played the ball a little bit more simple than" in the first leg and United's first three Premier League games.

He says that "you can create gaps" in the Brugge defence and United "score so that is also good."

"Every goal shall give confidence to every player, even Wayne [Rooney]" and van Gaal says he is "very happy for him."

United will need Rooney on top form to proceed from the UEFA Champions League group stages of which they have now qualified for.

The draw for the group stages is on Thursday and United could face Bayern Munich or Barcelona, Van Gaal's former clubs but when asked if United are ready to play the German and Spanish champions van Gaal says he doesn't "think they want to draw us."

Van Gaal is 'very pleased' because "it was [United's] aim to participate in the Champions League [group stages]" and they have "made it tonight."
