Manchester United striker James Wilson is close to leaving the club on a season-long loan, despite the Reds now having just one striker in Wayne Rooney.

Wilson set to leave Old Trafford for season long loan

The Times report that it is "looking very much like James Wilson will be leaving United on loan, as it stands" with West Brom reported to be interested in the young England striker.

Javier Hernandez has already left United, signing for Bayer Leverkusen while Adnan Januzaj has joined Borussia Dortmund on loan, leaving United with just Wilson and Rooney as strikers.

United have been incredibly busy in the last few days of the transfer window with young AS Monaco striker Anthony Martial close to signing for the club for a record fee for a teenager of around £36million.

Busy few days for United as numerous players leave club

Meanwhile, Jonny Evans has joined West Bromwich Albion and Tyler Blackett has joined Celtic. Anders Lindegaard has joined West Bromwich Albion alongside Evans.

The possible departure of Wilson indicates another arrival at United, possibly a big name with just one day left of the English transfer window, closing at 6PM on Tuesday 1st September.

Wilson got his United debut in May 2014, scoring twice against Hull City under interim manager Ryan Giggs at Old Trafford but has since made just four starts for United, coming on as a subsitute thirteen times.

The English striker has scored a further two goals, his latest coming in early February against Cambridge United in the FA Cup fourth round replay at Old Trafford.

Wilson leaving will be a good move for him, getting a full season of football, instead of just five starts in a season, under his belt to properly develop as a forward in the Premier League will be key.

Since his debut at United, he hasn't continued to improve as a player at the rate he did before joining the first team. United will need to sign another striker to ensure Rooney and Anthony Martial are not the only options but it is unlikely Louis van Gaal will allow Wilson to go if he has not got a replacement lined up.
