Former Manchester United midfielders Roy Keane and Paul Scholes have slammed the current team’s attacking stars following the disappointing 0-0 draw at home to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

Speaking on ITV after yesterday’s game, Roy Keane labelled United and England captain Wayne Rooney as “awful”, saying that he is “as guilty as anyone” for United’s recent  lacklustre performance in front of goal.

The former Everton man has endured a tough start to this campaign, registering just two Premier League goals and often looking bereft of ideas on the ball. Keane believes that part of the problem lies in Rooney’s off-field antics, in which he was recently seen slapping a wrestler at a WWE event – something the former United skipper labelled as “nonsense”, saying that “there’s no benefit” to Rooney.

Moving forward, Keane said that Rooney must “step up to the plate” and “do a lot more” to lead by example as Manchester United captain. According to the Republic of Ireland assistant manager, Rooney “mentally does not look very sharp” and “doesn’t look great” physically either.

Young Martial criticised by Scholes

Anthony Martial has been a stand out performer for Manchester United this season, but United legend Paul Scholes lambasted the young Frenchman after last night’s display. Working as a pundit for BT Sport, Scholes attacked Martial by saying that “he [Martial] doesn’t look bothered if he misses a chance, not bothered if he scores a goal” and that the Frenchman “isn’t a centre forward” like Gary Lineker and Michael Owen.

Despite the £36 million signing’s fast start to life at Old Trafford, the goals have dried up recently as he has gone without a goal in his last six games for the club. Scholes, who scored 107 goals for the Old Trafford outfit, believes that Martial “still has a lot to prove goal scoring wise” and went on to say that “maybe they [Manchester United] need to go into the transfer market in January” for a centre forward.

The comments from Scholes are the latest in a series of vociferous attacks on the current Manchester United side, being very critical of Louis Van Gaal’s play style.
