According to a report from the BBC, Jose Mourinho is in talks with Manchester United to become their next manager. Reports have been saying that United have been in talks with his representatives for the past two weeks. Manchester Evening News also reported earlier that the two sides have been talking.
Van Gaal’s hot run keeps him on the job while Pep heads to City
A combination of Louis van Gaal's dreadful December and Mourinho's departure from Chelsea saw many rumors swirl that Mourinho was the next man for the job. However, van Gaal's job was safe while the Portuguese remains jobless. For awhile, future Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was linked to the United job before confirming that he will be with The Citizens after this season, replacing Manuel Pellegrini.
December saw a miserable month for van Gaal which saw the Red Devils pick up two points out of a possible 15. The festive month also saw them crash out of the UEFA Champions League and knocked down to the Europa League.
However, United have turned it around so far in January and the early parts of February. The team has picked up 10 points out of a possible 15, including a 1-0 win over Liverpool for a season sweep, and won both their FA Cup matches, so they’re trending in the right direction.
Pep - Jose once again?
Should Jose Mourinho be appointed Manchester United boss, it will set up another rivalry showdown between Guardiola and Mourinho. Guardiola has owned the head-to-head against Mourinho picking up seven wins out of the 15 matches they have played. The former Real Madrid manager has only defeated the Spaniard three times and drawn five.
Mourinho does have more honors than Guardiola though, leading that matchup 17-14. Both men have won the Champions League title twice, but Guardiola has won on the global stage with three FIFA Club World Cup titles.
