Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has come out and insisted that Memphis Depay should not be made a scapegoat for Chelsea's late equaliser on Sunday.

Rooney says it wasn't Memphis' fault for Chelsea's goal

Memphis has been heavily criticised by loads of United fans for his pass when United was on the attack at the end of the game against Chelsea, and the winger gave the ball away. From there Chelsea went down the other end and equalised, but Rooney has defended the Dutch winger saying it wasn't his fault.

Rooney said "I think we are all disappointed" as there was so much more for Chelsea to do after Memphis gave the ball away in the opposition box, but it seems to be that Memphis is the one that is getting crucified because he's struggled this season.

Rooney says Memphis is a great player and will improve

The United and England captain continued to say "Memphis is a fantastic player and that happens, we all give bad passes away" which is true as it was everyone's fault as to why they couldn't stop the goal from happening when there was so much still to happen on the way to the goal.

Memphis signed for United last summer, and a lot was expected of him when he signed for the club, but it was always going to take the player time to try and adjust. The problem is a lot of United fans aren't patient enough and blame him for everything. Rooney feels he will come good for the club, though.

Rooney said Chelsea's goal came from more than one mistake

Rooney feels that "a lot of things happened" for the Chelsea goal "so I don't think we can stand here and blame Memphis" which is good as he will need the support from the rest of the players to try, and help him through a very difficult spell at United.

Rooney feels the main reason why United conceded against Chelsea was because of the pressure that was being applied saying "the game was broken up a bit. We gave too many free kicks away and then couldn't get up the pitch" which meant the team just couldn't hang onto the ball giving the home side the momentum to score.
