McClaren: "Naivety left us with a mountain to climb"

Steve McClaren spoke to the media after Newcastle United's 2-0 defeat to Swansea City in the Premier League and branded the game a "waste of a game" after Daryl Janmaat was sent-off in the first half.

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren spoke to the media after his side's 2-0 defeat away at Swansea City on Saturday in the Premier League.

Bafetimbi Gomis gave Swansea the lead inside the opening 10 minutes of the game and Andre Ayew sealed the victory for the Welsh club in the 52nd minute.

The main talking point in McClaren's post-match interview was Daryl Janmaat's red card, which saw Newcastle play five minutes of the first half and all the second half with only 10 men.

Janmaat's red card cost Newcastle

Defender Janmaat was sent-off shortly before half-time after picking up two yellow cards for fouls on Jefferson Montero. The Dutchmen was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on the Swansea winger earlier in the first half before picking up his second booking for pulling Montero's shirt in the 41st minute.

McClaren said that Janmaat's "little bit of naivety" left Newcastle with a "mountain to climb".

Montero caused Janmaat persistent problems during the 41 minutes he was on the pitch and McClaren said that Newcastle knew the Ecuador international would be a "danger" but "unfortunately we fell into the trap."

The former England manager added that he was "not too sure" whether Janmaat's second booking deserved a yellow card but he was "disappointed" that the two bookings were in the opponents half.

A 'waste of a game'

McClaren said that the match against Swansea was a "waste of a game".

"You need to learn something from games and we learnt nothing apart from it is very difficult to win with 10 men" especially against a "very good Swansea team."

Newcastle also lost Moussa Sissoko to a groin injury at half-time and McClaren said that "I don't think you can judge us on that game and performance which is a shame."

McClaren responds to Monk

Swansea manager Gary Monk said in his post-match press conference that Janmaat's sending off had little impact on the game, which he thought his side were dominant throughout, however McClaren disagreed.

The Newcastle manager said that although he thought the hosts started "well" he said that his side "grew into the game" and kept playing their style of football.

Monk also said that Newcastle's tactic was to "kick" his side off the park. However, McClaren was quick to dispute this claim and said that "I don't think we are capable of kicking people off the park....our team is a football team, not kickers."

"As always you make your presence known to your opponent which we did but there was one tackle too many," McClaren added.
