It is no secret Newcastle United are in need of a top quality striker to help aid their Premier League survival mission.

With Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend already purchased, who should NUFC splash the cash on?

Fan confusion

Both Loic Remy and Saido Berahino are high in demand in this transfer window and Newcastle have spoken of their interest in both forwards. Fans seem to be torn over which of the two they would prefer in their side.

Some supporters want to see ex-United player Remy back on Tyneside due to his previous affiliation with the club and it is no surprise why. Remy notched 14 goals in 26 games in his loan season at Newcastle and that type of fire power would be crucial heading into the last 15 games of the season.

Some fans want the younger, quicker Berahino, however. A player who should be playing regular top flight football but isn't making the pitch under Tony Pulis' reign at West Brom.

The pros and cons

Both players have their strengths and weaknesses. Remy for example has proven he can score goals in the Premier League and knows the English game well despite only arriving from France in 2013. He has strength and a good heading ability, which may suit Newcastle due to Towsend playing down the wing.

However, some sections of the Newcastle faithful haven't forgotten the time the Frenchman turned down a permanent move to the North East in favour of sitting on the bench at Chelsea. That type of disloyality isn't greatly appreciated in Newcastle.

Saido Berahino also has his postives and negatives. Despite only being 22, Berahino has netted 22 league goals for the Baggies. 14 of those came in a successful season last year. He has pace and good technical ability and with the vision of Shelvey now available to Newcastle, his runs in behind may be just what the Magpies need.

However, Berahino has also made headlines for his off the pitch behaviour. He has been filmed whilst taking so-called 'laughing gas', arrested for drink driving and has had numerous fallings out with his staff and fellow players whilst at West Brom. It seems like every other week his temperament is being called into question.

Who is the more likely option?

So who should fans of Newcastle pin their hopes on before February 2nd? Well it looks like West Brom are unwilling to let Berahino leave for the second transfer window in a row. Chairman Jeremy Peace has valued Berahino at over £25m to try and warn off potential suitors. It is unlikely Newcastle will pay this kind of money, despite being the highest spenders of this transfer window.

To add to this, Berahino seems to be after a move to a top team. A move to the North East may seem like a sidewards move.

Remy, on the other hand, is looking for a way out of London and Chelsea seem willing to let him go. The champions have signed Alexandre Pato recently which means Remy is likely to feature even less for the club.

But the question remains whether the deal will be a loan or a permanent switch. Chelsea are rumoured to want £12m for the striker and Leicester may be willing to pay that. Newcastle would certainly prefer a loan move for the 29-year-old.

Either player would significantly improve struggling Newcastle.
