Jermain Defoe, who recently moved back to the Premier League in a shock transfer move to join struggling Sunderland, has publicly affirmed his belief that The Black Cats can stay up in the league, although many critics have already written off their chances due to their lack of goal-scoring options at the moment.

He played against his old club Tottenham, in a 2-1 defeat on Saturday, but is confident that they can avoid relegation at all costs.

Defoe joined The Stadium of Light on a three-and-a-half-year contract deal after playing his trade in the MLS with Toronto FC, before media reports went wild over the past couple of months with speculation that he was unsettled.

Gus Poyet's side are barely out of the relegation zone at the moment, only goal difference separates them from the bottom three - but Defoe told the media that he is confident of a revival.

When talking to Sky Sports News, he said: "I thought we did well, it was always going to be a difficult game. When you got to White Hart Lane, there are going to be spells when Spurs have a lot of possession but our shape was good, our game plan was good and it could have been different. Overall, there were a lot of positives to take from the game - I thought we deserved a point.

If we continue to play like that, we will pick up points, definitely. I'm really looking forward to the challenge and I believe we will create a lot of chances for me and others to score goals. I am always confident that, if I get chances, I will score goals. That's why I'm here.

Sunderland host Fulham in their FA Cup fourth round tie on Saturday afternoon, and will be expecting to beat the Championship side.
