Sunderland need to bounce back and claim three crucial points against West Ham on Saturday, according to Jack Rodwell.

Both sides are in freefall at this pivotal stage of the season, recording two wins between them since the turn of the year. The Black Cats suffered a humbling defeat to fellow strugglers Aston Villa last weekend, as Tim Sherwood’s men ran out 4-0 winners at the Stadium of Light.

This result cost Gus Poyet his job on Wearside, leaving them one point above the relegation zone. Rodwell, who participated in the full 90 minutes against the Villains, is hoping his club will react positively when they travel to the Boleyn Ground under new boss Dick Advocaat.

Also under pressure is West Ham manager Sam Alladyce, the East London outfit were contesting for a European spot earlier this campaign but a recent dip in form has seen their top four challenge inevitably conclude. The Irons fell short against Arsenal last time out, a third consecutive Premier League loss.

The Hammers still maintain a healthy top half position in the league, fending off Newcastle in 11th. Their quality is something that cannot be underestimated, says the former Manchester City man:

“It is a massive game and we were obviously hurt following the last game against Aston Villa, so we have to make that motivate us because this game is crucial and we need three points to bounce back.

“Barclays Premier League games can go either way and they were flying at the start of the season, but even though they haven’t been as good lately they will want the three points to kick-up the league.”

The 24-year-old added: “There are nine games left and everybody wants to win.”

The two played out a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture, with Jordi Gomez and Stuart Downing on the scoresheet.
