Mansfield Town have signed Daniel Alfei on loan from Swansea City until the end of the season.

Alfei has been with the Swans since he was a young boy, making his debut as an 18-year-old in the FA Cup against Colchester United in 2011.

However, there is fierce competition at right-back and so the 23-year-old has struggled to break through into the team on a regular basis so far - making only three senior appearances.

Mansfield will certainly benefit from his arrival nonetheless, the former Wales youth international having enjoyed time on loan in League Two in the past and being set to do so again with the Stags, who are bidding for promotion to the third tier.

Youngster brings experience

Despite his lack of game time in South Wales, Alfei is by no means inexperienced. Last season, he made 11 appearances in the fourth tier with Northampton Town, having made 15 for Portsmouth in the division the year prior.

On top of this, he accumulated a total of 37 caps at youth level for Wales, representing their under-17, under-19 and under-21 teams from 2009 to 2014.

Mansfield manager Adam Murray recognised this too, telling the club's official website that his new signing "is at a good age and already has experience of playing in this league."

As a result, the boss was unable to hide his delight at Alfei's arrival, saying the club feel "privileged" to have him "on board" until the summer.

Stags looking to move on up

Despite a difficult 2014-15 campaign, Mansfield are flying in League Two this season and currently sit seventh in the standings - just inside the play-offs and only seven points off automatic promotion.

In order to bolster their bid for a move on up to League One, Murray has brought in Alfei as he believes he is a player who can be "mould[ed]" into one who can "take the club forward."

"Dan will fit into the way we want to play and has superb attributes," he said. He described the defender as an "intelligent" footballer who brings "excellent" qualities to the back line, as well as giving the team "a good attacking balance" with his contributions down the wing.

Alfei is in line to make his debut for the Stags on Saturday afternoon in front of the home fans, as they take on Morecambe.
