Argentina have been made many people's pre-tournament favourites to lift this year's Copa América title and they will look to get off on a strong footing in their opening match against Paraguay, who reached the final of the tournament in 2011.

With Lionel Messi on a high after finishing the season with a remarkable treble at Barcelona and Sergio Agüero winning the Premier League Golden Boot, hopes are high despite Argentina not having won the competition since the early 1990s.

And, while La Albiceleste's main strength is clearly in the potency of their attack, in Nicolas Otamendi they have one of the most in-demand defenders in world football after an excellent season in La Liga for Valencia.

Their opponents have one of the most experienced squads in the competition, with three players having accrued over a century of international caps. Between them, Justo VillarRoque Santa Cruz and Paulo da Silva have a combined total of 331 appearances for their nation.

Both managers have their entire squads to pick from at this stage of the competition, with Argentina manager Gerardo Martino likely to stick with the same side that beat Bolivia 5-0 in a pre-tournament friendly - with the additions of Messi and Javier Mascherano, who were busy winning the Champions League at the time.

Meanwhile, former Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City target man Santa Cruz is his nation's all-time highest scorer, and is likely to continue leading the attack at the age of almost 34.

This group stage clash at the Estadio La Portada will be the 104th meeting between the two sides, and it is a tie in which Argentina unsurprisingly enjoy a far superior record.

The World Cup finalists have won 58 times against Paraguay, who have just 15 victories in this fixture to their name; it would be a major shock to see this number increase to 16, but it was also a major shock to see Paraguay in the Copa América final in 2011.

Can Messi surpass Maradona?

As with the majority of Argentina's games, much of the pre-tournament fanfare has surrounded Messi. While it is probably fair to say that he has never captured hearts in his homeland to the same extent he has managed in Catalonia, this tournament provides the perfect chance for the 27-year-old to establish himself as one of Argentina's favourite sons.

He fell at the final hurdle in Brazil last year, and, while that may well have been Messi's best chance of lifting the World Cup, the Copa América gives him the chance to better Diego Maradona, who never won the competition during his time with the national side.

Prediction:

Argentina have been made the favourites for a reason and should qualify from Group B with ease. Uruguay are likely their only real threat in the group with Jamaica completing the group line-up, and they will be raring to go by the time they take to the pitch against a Paraguay side which has passed its peak since the last tournament. A comfortable three- or possibly even four-goal victory is realistic in what should be a fairly one-sided affair.
