Sweden U21's drew 1-1 with Portugal U21's in the UEFA European U21 Championships on Wednesday, as Goncalo Paciencia's 82nd minute strike was cancelled out by Simon Tibbling's last minute equaliser for Sweden.

Portugal dominate early on

Top of the group going into the game, Portugal looked to stamp their authority on the game by taking the game to Sweden from the get-go.

Raphael Guerreiro had the first shot of the match, as the left back dragged a shot wide of the target. Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho had arguably the best chance of the first half just a few minutes later, as he forced a save from goalkeeper Patrick Carlgren, upon being put in on goal by Ivan Cavaleiro.

Cavaleiro was again the provider for his sides next chance, with captain Sergio Oliviera striking over from around 20-yards after being tee'd up nicely by Cavaleiro.

Developments elsewhere

With the first half ticking by, word came that Italy had gone two goals ahead against England in the other Group B game, meaning that the men in yellow needed to secure at least a draw in order to progress ahead of the Italians.

This development saw them take a more attacking approach, and brought their first chance of the game, albeit luckily. A mistake from Ricardo Esgaio in defence saw the ball break to Oscar Hiljemark, who blazed over the bar despite having time on the ball.

Second half

Just as the first had, the second half started with a flurry of energy and chances, although this time they came for both teams. Oliviera missed a good chance from just a few yards out, hitting the ball over from Guerriero's cross.

John Guidetti had been quiet in the first half, but produced one of the chances of the game as his right-footed cross found strike partner Isaac Kiese Thelin in the area. Unfortunately for his team, the target man couldn't get his header on target, and it flew wide of the goal.

Portugal winger Bernardo Silva, impressive throughout, almost made the difference with just an hour gone as he weaved his way through a couple of players, before shooting into the side netting.

Late drama

With the game seemingly petering out into a 0-0 draw, there was a sense of surprise as Portugal opened the scoring in the 82nd minute. Substitute Paciencia took the ball from Iuri Medeiros, before dropping his shoulder to the right and lashing a powerful effort into the bottom right hand corner.

Some may have been forgiven for thinking that the Swedes were down and out, but they showed similar resilience to what was showcased in their opening victory over Italy, in order to level the score at the death.

A long ball into the box looked to have little quality nor end product, until Tibbling made it his own, taking it under control and jinking past a man, before his deflected shot made its way into the net. Cue pandemonium from the bench, and heartbreak for Italy.

With both sides full in the knowledge that a 1-1 draw took them through to Saturday's quarter finals, Sweden happily allowed Portugal to keep the ball in their own half for the final moments, as the game ended one all.

Portugal will face Germany on Saturday, whilst Sweden will play Denmark.
