Germany needed just one point from their final group game, that being a home fixture against Georgia, to seal their place in the 2016 European Championships, and got more than required as they won a tight game 2-1.

Joachim Low will have been disappointed his side failed to take advantage of their opportunity in the last match against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin, but he must have also been confident heading into this game that his side would have enough to do the business regardless.

Low also promised that the side he fielded would be the strongest possible, however he would have to pick a team without Mario Götze who is out until January. Bastian Schweinsteiger (thigh) also missed out.

Georgia had recorded just three wins, two coming against the whipping boys of the group Gibraltar and the other a 1-0 home win versus Scotland.

This was be the fifth meeting between the teams, with Germany running out winners in all previous matches, so there was a small chance for Georgia to play the role of party spoilers.

First half

Thomas Müller found space in the second minute from the right side of the box, but his effort was saved easily by Revishvili.

Georgia saw plenty of the ball early on as the nerves were perhaps beginning to creep in for the hosts. In the fifth minute a shot went well over from Kazaishvili.

A minute later Toni Kroos had a volley go narrowly wide of the right post in an entertaining start to the game.

In the eighth minute the hosts tried a free kick from the training ground as Kroos dinked the ball over to Müller, but he couldn't quite reach the ball and it went harmlessly out of play.

Germany began turning the screw, and twice inside a minute they came close through Ilkay Gündogan and Marco Reus. Revishili proved equal to both.

Marco Reus had a moment to forget in the unlucky 13th minute as he was through one-on-one, yet somehow blasted over from 7 yards.

Georgia almost took a 27th minute lead after a lull in the game, Okriashvili forcing a strong save from Manuel Neuer as his shot was heading for the bottom right corner.

Reus missed another opportunity clean through on goal froma Gündogan pass. He could have perhaps squared, but instead pulled the shot across goal as the visitors were let off again.

The Dortmund winger was again involved a few moments later; his 20 yard free-kick comfortably saved. A few boos and jeers were heard as the teams headed for the changing rooms deadlocked at 0-0 after 45 minutes.

Second half

Low's side should have been well clear had it not been for the wastefulness of Reus, and in all honesty the teams looked tired and lacking focus.

Germany did however get the breakthrough four minutes into the second half via the penalty spot.

Germany take the lead, but not for long

Kankava tripped Mesut Özil just inside the area which was more than enough for Kralovec to point to the spot. Thomas Müller sent Revishvili the wrong way, beating him to the right, making it 1-0 to the hosts and somewhat easing the nerves.

Kvekveskiri seriously tested Neuer in the 53rd minute with a superb effort that was heading into the top right.

Kankava went from villain to hero when he levelled for Georgia just moments after the save. The corner was only cleared to the edge of the box, where he struck a sweet volley into the corner past Neuer, sparking rapturous scenes among the travelling few.

The visitors could have taken a shock lead as Kasaishvili brought the ball forward on the break, twisting and turning inside the area before firing over from about ten yards.

Neuer bailed Die Mannschaft out again as Okriashvili had an effort from a few yards out miraculously tipped over the bar following a ball across the six yard box.

Andrew Schürrle had a chance to give Germany the lead in the 68th minute but his effort from inside the area was straight at the 'keeper as he never really connected with the ball properly.

Marco Reus hit an effort from outside the box a minute later than was comfortably palmed for a corner.

Kruse wins it late on

Substitute Max Kruse gave Germany the lead again with 11 minutes left, sidefooting an effort perfectly into the far left corner after a nicely weighted pass into the area from Özil.

The hosts threatened a third goal for the remainder of the game, but it never came. The favourites for the 2016 European Championships qualified, and topped the group, however Low will not have been happy with the way his side struggled against relative minnows Georgie.

Full respect must go to Kakhaber Tskhadadze's side who were resilient throughout and perhaps would have snatched a point on another day.

Germany march onwards, Europe awaiting the world champions with open arms.
