At the other end of the table Werder Bremen needed a win to move up to 11th, however if Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt win then they will drop to 14th.

Borussia Dortmund needed a win to go 5 points ahead of Ruhr rivals, Schalke 04. A win would take them within 4 points of 2nd place Bayer Leverkusen.

Borussia Dortmund started the brighter of the two sides. After five minutes Schmelzer ran down the wing cut it back to Reus, who’s shot was blocked and the danger was removed by the Bremen defence. For the first fifteen minutes, Dortmund had all the chances and possession and looked the most likely side to break the deadlock.

Werder Bremen had their moments however the end product wasn’t good enough. In the first half chances for Bremen was limited. After some good play down the left, the ball was played Elia he crossed to Di Santo but he couldn’t get the ball out of his feet.

In the first half Dortmund got themselves into dangerous areas of the pitch. Reus ran through the midfield but had his shot blocked. After twenty-five minutes Schmelzer drives down the wing, cuts the ball back to Lewandowski who fires a shot, which nestled in the bottom corner of Werder Bremen’s net.

It took Bremen thirty minutes into the match to have their first real attempt on goal, the corner came in but the header just went over the bar. A minute later another chance for Bremen to draw level but Di Santo’s header was an easy save for Roman Weidenfeller, a spectator up until that point.

Borussia Dortmund were looking to double their lead before half time. They had a chance with fourteen minutes until the break, Marco Reus crossed for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who nodded for Henrik Mkhitaryan but his shot hit the side netting. A golden opportunity missed by Die Schwarzgelben. Then with four minutes left until the break, the lead was doubled. Mkhitaryan made up for his earlier miss, he ran across the box evading Bremen’s desperate to give Dortmund a healthy lead at the break.

Dortmund fully deserved their lead going into the second half. Half time Werder Bremen 0-2 Borussia Dortmund.

The second half restarted and Dortmund started how they started the first half. They had the intention to kill this game dead. Two minutes into the second half, Marco Reus took the corner, clipped of a Bremen defender and fell to Dortmund defender Manuel Friedrich who tapped in an easy volley at the back post. 3-0 Dortmund. Four minutes later another chance fell to the title hopefuls, another good solo run this time from Marco Reus, he slipped in Robert Lewandowski he fired his shot miles over the bar. Lukasz Piszczek fired a shot goal wards from 25-yards, going agonizingly close to getting Dortmund’s fourth goal. In the 62nd minute it was finally 4-0. Great move started off by Mkhitaryan and finished off by Mkhitaryan, great 1-2 with Dortmund winger, Marco Reus. Mkhitaryan slotted past the on-coming Raphael Wolf.

Bremen’s first chance of the half came in the fifty-fifth minute when Elia could only get the end of his boot onto a dangerous cross across the 6 -yard box. Niles Peterson cut inside and but his shot never troubled Roman Weidenfeller. Another opportunity was wasted by Ludovic Obraniak his optimistic shot was a waste and could have created a potential scoring chance for Bremen to get back in the game. Bremen’s best chance came from Martin Kobylanski, his shot caused problems for Weidenfeller. Straight after that Werder Bremen had a penalty shout turned down after shout for handball from Nuri Sahin.

After having to withhold some heavy Bremen pressure, Dortmund star-man Robert Lewandowski right-footed strike forced Raphael Wolf to make a fine save. With five minutes to go, the nail in the coffin was finally placed as Robert Lewandowski sprung the offside trap and bared down on Wolf unopposed, rounded the desperate dive to slot home with ease to make it an embarrassing home defeat for Die Grün-Weißen. Wolf kept the score to 5-0 after pulling off another fine save this time from Sokratis’ header.

With two minutes to go, Werder Bremen went on the attack to get the consolation goal, after a big deflections the ball fell to Levent Aycicek who finished calmly under the pressure from Marcel Schmelzer.
