Going into the penultimate game of the season Bayern Munich had nothing to lose or play for whereas hosts Hamburg had everything to lose and play for with the threat of relegation looming. Bayern brushed off Werder Bremen last weekend winning 5-2 and Hamburg were beaten 3-1 away to Augsburg. Three points for the visitors Bayern were worthless with the title already wrapped up. Three points for Hamburg would almost certainly secure the relegation playoff place.

Early on Dante nervously played the ball back to Neuer in goal who cleared the danger. Minutes later Dante made a similar mistake and again shakily passed the ball back to Neuer. The German number one's kick only went as far as Hamburg's lone striker Illicevic but he couldn't capitalise and only managed to hit the side netting.

Calhanoglu beat Neuer from afar but his curling effort went just wide of the post. Neuer was again forced to rush from his line as Dante attempted another pass back which wasn't any better than the previous two at this point. The ball almost landed at the feet of Rincon but thankfully for both Dante and Neuer their blushes were spared as the Venezuelan failed to control the ball.

Mario Götze broke the deadlock just after the half hour mark. Robben threaded through Götze who cooly slotted past Adler from close range after dancing through a few Hamburg defenders. Van Der Vaart produced a magnificent save from Neuer after he turned Boateng and sent a shot goalwards which Neuer managed to tip over the bar and out for a corner.

Both teams finished the half with chances going their respective ways but the score remained the same.

Half Time Hamburg 0-1 Bayern

Plenty of chances went either way and the game was still very much up for grabs. A possible upset on the cards for Hamburg was definitely not being written off at this point but they needed to take their chances in the second period.

The teams came back out unchanged and the action was back underway. Shortly after the restart there were huge calls for a penalty, especially from Van Der Vaart who felt his cross hit the arm of Dante inside the box. The referee wagged his finger at the Dutchman and play resumed.

Thomas Muller grabbed Bayern's second for the afternoon just before the hour mark as he turned in a Götze shot. Götze was completely unmarked I'm the box and guided an effort goal bound which Muller ever so slightly flicked on past Adler increasing Bayern' lead to two.

Calhanoglu tested Neuer with an effort from outside the box and could only look as  Neuer denied Hamburg again. Götze got his second of the afternoon shortly after the Turk's effort. Robben bombed down the wing with his electrifying speed and found the young German at the back post who had the easy job of tapping it in from yards out. At 3-0 to Bayern, three points were surely secured.

Hamburg got straight back into the affair through the aforementioned Calhanoglu. Calhanoglu controlled the ball with his chest before he unleashed a thunderbolt from outside the box and Neuer could only look as it hit the back of the net.

Hamburg's jubilation was short lived and just two minutes later Bayern had their fourth through Peruvian Claudio Pizarro. Pizarro's first attempt was hit up into the air by Adler and Pizarro was first to the falling ball and connected with an extravagant overhead kick, ending any slight hope of a late Hamburg comeback.

Jerome Boateng was sent for an early bath as he lifted his arm to Hamburg youngster Kerem Dermibay. The youngster theatrically went to the floor to the dismay of Boateng who went up and shouted in the face of Dermibay before lifting his hands. Dermibay received a yellow for his part in the lady-like scuffle.

The last chance of the game fell to Hamburg in the dying embers. Jiracek was whiskers away from connecting  with Rincon' cross and allowing the Hamburg fans to leave the ground with somewhat of a smile on their faces.

Full time Hamburg 1-4 Bayern Munich

Bayern stay unmoved as do Hamburg. Hamburg are sitting just one point above the relegation zone going into the final game of the season. It's looking ever more likely that Hamburg's fifty-three year stay in the Bundesliga can only be saved by the relegation playoff.
