Under-23 coach, Josef Zinnbauer has been appointed the interim manager of Hamburg following the dismissal of Mirko Slomka.

During today's press conference, HSV CEO Dietmar Beiersdorfer confirmed that he had been in touch with former Mainz 05 manager, Thomas Tuchel. However, the meeting "didn't have anything to do with the current situation."

Among the names linked with the vacant manager's role at HSV were Bruno Labbadia, Huub Stevens, Thomas Doll and Tuchel, however, Beiersdorfer recruited from within.

Slomka had only been in charge of Hamburg for seven months (W3, D3, L10) before been called in to a lengthy meeting on Monday evening.

"We are hopeful that Joe can handle this situation, through his emotional presence and through the way he acts, we are hopeful that he can spark a reaction from within the team," said Beiersdorfer in his press conference.

"Joe and his team could gave the fitting solution in store for us. Of course, it is something entirely different to coach a team in the Regionalliga, but he has everything required for this job."

Zinnbauer has not had any experience in the top flight, playing his football at lower league levels. The 44-year olds coaching career started at VfB Oldenburg in the fourth and fifth divisions before been appointed assistant coach at Karlsruher SC in 2011, before taking charge of their under-23 side the following year, moving on to HSV in 2014.

His first test will be a home tie against current Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich on Saturday 20. Hamburg currently sit bottom of the table, picking up just one point in three games, having yet to score a goal this campaign.
