The FC Köln midfielder has undergone surgery to fix a troublesome meniscus problem, but his availability for the rest of the year is doubtful.

The Billy Goats winger had missed their defeat against Freiburg last weekend with a thigh muscle tear. However, this a set-back he wasn't expecting. The club and player decided this was the best action to take, although whether he'll return for the remainder of the Hinrunde is another question altogether.

However, there was some good news, as the surgery was a success: "The operation went well," said FC team physician Dr. Peter Schäferhoff. "Marcel is ready to begin rehabilitation exercises and individual training after a break in the coming weeks."

The troublesome meniscus has now been smoothed, in his left knee,  but the downtime of midfielder is extended to a total of four to five weeks. That does mean he could be fit for the game against former-club Mainz, though it's unlikely Peter Stöger will risk any unnecessary involvement for one of his star players.
