Armin Veh steps down from managerial duties with relegation strugglers VfB Stuttgart

Armin Veh bought his second spell with VfB Stuttgart to a premature end, having returned to the Mercedes-Benz stadium in May, after a 1-0 defeat to Augsburg sent them to the bottom of the Bundesliga after 12 matches.

Armin Veh has stepped down from his position as head coach with German side Stuttgart, following their seventh defeat of the season on Sunday.

The 53-year-old decided that a 1-0 loss to Augsburg was the final straw at the weekend, as the former Hamburg boss conversed with club officials following the fixture on his decision to vacate the managerial opportunity.

The team is better than the place in the table. Nine points from 12 games are just not enough. For that, I am responsible.

Veh returned to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium for a second spell in May, signing a two-year contract with The Reds following a spell between 2006 and 2008.

With just two wins from 12 matches in this season’s Bundesliga, the side – captained by  Christian Gentner – sit bottom of the table with the club president Bernd Wahler confirming the departure on Monday. He said:

"Armin Veh informed us last night in an interview about his decision. He is convinced that a change to the coach position is necessary to get back on track. We respect his decision."

Veh also released a statement on the decision, thanking fans for their support after a robust opening to their campaign, before taking full responsibility for lacklustre performances. He added:

"The team is better than the place in the table. Nine points from 12 games are just not enough. For that, I am responsible.

"I thank the club's management, in particular the president, for the confidence placed in me. And it is my strong desire to thank the fans. You have given us fantastic support."

Having lost their last three consecutive matches, Stuttgart commence their aspirations of staying in Germany’s top tier with a trip to Freiburg on Friday – a side who sit just three points above the managerless Germans.

Veh’s exit from the club sees him bring a conclusion to his 10th managerial spell, having also previously managed the likes of FC Augsburg, VfL Wolfsburg and Hamburger SV.
