These two former Bundesliga sides were separated by just a point and a couple of places going into this encounter and it was certainly a fixture many couldn't wait for after this weekend's action. Going into the the home side Braunschweig draw 1-1 against an inform Union Berlin, their guest Düsseldorf had more luck last time out as they secured a 2-0 victory against FSV Frankfurt.

Despite the hype before kick off the first half didn't match it, it wasn't the action packed encounter we'd hoped for. There wasn't many chances and neither keeper had much to do, mainly due to the great defending on show. Both teams despite remaining strong in defence they struggled to find the key pass in the final third. Most attempts on goal came from distance and weren't that impressive and crosses were well dealt with by Rafal Gikiewicz and Lars Unnerstall. One of the only good chances saw Salim Khelifi put an effort on target from inside the area, only to see it go into Unnerstall's hands.

The second half however proved to be a much welcomed improvement, the half saw a much higher tempo being played and more success in attacks. The crosses into the box were causing more problems, however efforts were going just off their mark. Seung-Woo Ryu had his decent long range effort saved by Unnerstall as the game ticked towards the hour mark. Ten minutes later the game had it's first goal, Håvard Nielsen brought down Mirko Boland's long pass and his touch saw him get enough space away from two defenders and his low effort somehow flew through Unnerstall's legs, certainly not a goal the Düsseldorf keeper will enjoy seeing again.

The game had it's opener and the game sprung into life as Düsseldorf equalised a minute after. From a corner Joel Pohjanpalo couldn't find the back of the net with his header as he was denied by the post, however the ball found Ben Halloren who had no trouble in doing so as he fired in at the back post.

Charlison Benschop found himself one-on-one, unfortunately for Fortuna Marcel Correia managed to recover well to get back and make a great challenge.

The winner came in the last minute of the game and there were fantastic scenes to enjoy. Nielsen's long range effort was deflected up off Mushagalusa Bakenga's back and into the path of Benjamin Kessel and despite the unclean strike it was enough for it to go past Unnerstall.

The loss sees Düsseldorf drop down to 6th place as Braunschweig leap up into 3rd place until other teams play tomorrow. Up next for the victors they travel to Heidenheim on Friday for the last game before the winter break, as for Fortuna they host Union Berlin.
