Defensive minded midfielder Julian Koch has struck a loan deal with St. Pauli.

In a bid to durm up some more playing time, the former Borussia Dortmund man has went to Hamburg for just that. The 24-year-old managed just seven minutes for Mainz this season, in a 2-0 win against Jürgen Klopp's men. The loan will last until the end of the season, though Ewald Lienen's men have an option to buy included.

"He brings the quality that can help us directly in fight against relegation. Therefore, we have opted for the short-term loan. Due to its strength in duels, but his mentality will give them more stability in defence," said Sporting Director Thomas Meggle on the club's website.

Koch will need to adapt to life in Northern Germany very quickly, as St. Pauli are currently struggling to stay in the division. They currently sit in seventeenth place, with a key game against fellow strugglers SV Sandhausen.
