Granit Xhaka joined the Foals in 2012 from Swiss club Basel. Since then the Swiss international midfielder has made eighty-five appearances.

It was announced earlier that Xhaka will be at Gladbach till 2019, there is an option to extend his contract till 2020, if he chooses to. Borussia's sporting director Max Eberl told the club's official website: "Granit has developed hugely in his two-and-a-half years with us and has become one of the most important players on the team. We're excited that we have been able to keep him here for the next few years." Xhaka added: "I feel comfortable at Borussia and am in my third season here. Therefore, there was never any doubt that I would extend my contract. I'm proud and happy to be able to play for Borussia in the future."

Favre later told a news conference that the contract extension was "good for the club. He's made huge progress, has more influence on the team and trains well," the coach said.
