Hertha Berlin welcomed Freiburg to the Olympiastadion for one of the most eagerly anticapated games of the bundesliga weekend.

Also at stake was a massive three points with both sides fighting to stay away from the relegation spots.

Pal Dardai will be searching for his first home win after leading his side to a 2-0 win away to Mainz the previous week. The interim coach is still believed to be in the running and getting another win would do his chances the world of good. Salomon Kalou returned from the Africa cup of nations and was put right in to the action. Julian Schieber was the lone striker.

Freiburg travelled to the capital coming off a heavy defeat to Borussia Dortmund in which they were comfortably beaten 3-0. With key players Nils Petersen and Admir Mehmdi unavailable through injury, their task was made even harder than before. Despite some decent perfomances Christian Streich's side still sit in the relegation spots.

The previous encounter is one Freiburg fans will not want to remember soon, known for conceding late goals. A Ronny strike in the sixth minute of injury time sealed a 2-2 draw and a point for Die Alte Dame.

Freiburg had a brilliant chance to open the scoring just two minutes in Guede was sent down the middle through on goal but the attackers lack of pace was evident and he was closed down quickly.

The opening 10 minutes were all Freiburg and with a few dangerous Hertha shots. Lone striker Julian Schieber found himself with space to turn and shoot but his shot was easily dealt with by Bürki in the Freiburg goal.

Come the 14th minute the deadlock was broken. A quick through ball fooled Brooks in the home defence after the ball then trickled through to Klaus who smashed it in to the net to begin, jubilant scenes in the away support. Dardai's side hadn't got started yet and influential players such as Ronny and Skjelbred were off the pace as of yet.

Hertha's most dangerous player in the opening half an hour was Valentin Stocker. The Swiss international sent a dangerous looking ball in to the box, it was the goalscorer Klaus who was their to cover up and maintain their one goal advantage.

A free kick in a dangerous position for Freiburg taken by Jonathan Schmid lifted over the Hertha wall and left Kraft helpless as the 26 year old watched it go just wide. A show of intention from the visitors who knew a two goal advantage would make life easier.

Kalou took a shot from distance which swerved making Bürki's save look even better. The Ivory Coast international playing his first game since his country's AFCON triumph in Equatorial Guiena.

An end to end game with Freiburg looking more threatening on the counter attack. Goalscorer Klaus looked even moe lively and was desperate to get on the scoresheet once more.

Halftime came and it was Freiburg in the driving seat. An early goal from Klaus all that seperated the teams. Dardai's men looked nervous and quiet and didn't really make an impact on the game to their interim coaches disappointment.

The opening stages of the second half were played out similar to the first half, Berlin dominating possesion, Freiburg dominating attempts on goal. Freiburg took a 2-0 lead on the 52nd minute a Philipp header finding the back of Krafts net. The Berlin boy scoring the goal which had all but killed Hertha off.

Hertha instantly responded and forced Bürki in to a fine double save, a let off for the Freiburg defence who had been caught unaware by the pace of Kalou.

With 30 minutes left, the stats showed that with two attempts Freiburg had found the net twice, efficentcy which will please the travelling faithful from down south. Hertha were becoming increasingly frustrated and it was beginning to show Plattenhardt picking up a needless booking.

Freiburg were beginning to relax, this led to coach Christian Streich deputising young Florian Kath. A sign of Freiburg's youth system working again, only a short time on the pitch but still invaluable experience.

In the final minutes Freiburg keeper Bürki was booked for time wasting, a silly yellow card to pick up when winning comfortably and one coach Streich will not be happy with.

The fulltime whistle blew and Freiburg picked up only their fourth win of the campaign and lifts them up level on points with Hertha.
