1. FSV Mainz goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino has expressed his desire to start more games for the club, after he made his first Bundesliga start at the weekend.

The Greek goalkeeper was selected in his country's World Cup squad for this summer's tournament, although he was not used throughout the competition.

Kapino joined Mainz, for around £2million, shortly after its conclusion and made his first appearance for Martin Schmidt's side two weeks ago against Hertha Berlin.

Even then it was due to a red card that Kapino came on, replacing Loris Karius after his sending off for taking down Valentin Stocker.

Despite an early mistake against the capital club, conceding three goals in that game and a further four against Borussia Dortmund on Friday, there was plenty to encourage the 20-year-old.

"It was important for me that I finally get on the pitch. Of course, the result for the team was bad," said Kapino.

A 4-2 defeat would suggest he had a poor game, but several impressive saves showed just why the Karneval club shelled out for his services.

Though he was keen to say, "it's not my character trait to be impatient," the shot-stopper did admit that he, "did not come to sit on the bench."

Whether the departure of Kasper Hjulmand and Schmidt's arrival means that Kapino gets further chances remains to be seen, especially with Karius now available after his suspension.

However, the Greece under-21 regular was full of praise for Mainz goalkeeper coach Stephan Kuhnert: "Kuhni has helped me to improve myself and to better understand German football."
