Just moments before kick-off with FC Schalke 04 on Sunday, FC Augsburg fans were given a pleasant surprise. The news that head coach Markus Weinzierl and sporting director Stefan Reuter is yet another step in the right direction for the Fuggerstädter.

Weinzierl has extended until 2019, while Reuter's new deal runs through to 2020. It's the icing on top of the cake for Augsburg and that cake could yet have a cherry on top, if they manage to qualify for Europe.

Augsburg currently sit in sixth place, two clear of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in seventh, following their dull 0-0 draw with Schalke.

This is in no small part thanks to Weinzierl and Reuter, who have formed a formidable partnership since the coach took over in 2012. After staving off relegation in his first season, he built upon that to lead FCA to their record finish last season. As previously mentioned, this campaign has the potential to be even better.

"The extension of the contracts with Stefan Reuter and Markus Weinzierl is something of a milestone for FC Augsburg," added club president Klaus Hofmann.

"It makes us proud that both have shown such a strong allegiance with Augsburg. We're convinced that with this duo, we are laying the foundations for a successful future together."
