Last time out the two teams couldn't be separated in their first ever meeting, this time provided the same outcome as neither came out on top in a high tempo clash.
Kaiserslautern are amongst the three team's fighting for the last automatic promotion spot and with Karlsruher and Darmstadt both being held to draw's today was the perfect opportunity for the Red Devil's to move three point's ahead. Kaiserslautern are enjoying a good run of form and are currently six game's unbeaten.
RB Leipzig go into this game knowing they need a win to leap above Eintract Braunschweig and into fifth place. They've managed to secure two victories since their loss to Heidenheim and they were both 2-1 win's against Nürnberg and Bochum.
After just two minute's into the game the handbag's were already out as Rodnei and Simon Zoller clashed off the ball, the later pushed the Brazilian which sparked a reaction. Luckily for both they were given a warning.
It was a great start to the game and despite there not being many chances in the opening minutes the game was being played at a high tempo and despite the early stages the duels were already heated.
RB Leipzig took the lead after fifteen minute's, Alexander Ring lost possession as they looked for a quick counter attack and the attack soon backfired. Georg Teigl charged forward and went on an impressive run before playing the ball to Emil Forsberg. The Swede took his time and picked out an unmarked Yussuf Poulsen who excellently curled his shot past Marius Müller.
It didn't take Kaiserslautern long to get themselves level, a long range effort was palmed away by Fabio Coltori's right arm and the rebound saw Kevin Stöger pick out Zoller and the unmarked striker was able to slot past Coltori.
The tempo remained high and soon after the equaliser Kaiserslautern threatened again when Chris Löwe shot from range forcing Coltori into another save in which he palmed away.
RB Leipzig had a glorious chance after the half hour mark Teigl played through Forsberg and the Swede only had to beat Müller and after lobbing the keeper he could only watch in despair as the shot went inches wide.
José Yordy Reyna had the last chance of the half as his effort from sixteen yards saw Müller in action once more and the keeper did well to palm away the danger.
The second half continued the same as the first, a really high tempo and both teams took in turns to attack. The visitor's however looked more threatening after Zoller was forced off before half time. Poulsen played through Forsberg and unfortunately he couldn't get to the ball in time as Müller rushed out to claim.
Kaiserslautern had a fantastic chance to go ahead as Jean Zimmer played in Sebastian Jacob and when the whole crowd thought his effort was in the ball rolled away from goal as the strike hit the side netting and Jacob turned away with his head in his hands.
Kaiserslautern finished the stronger of the two sides and they came close to a second as the game edged towards the last ten minutes. Kerem Demirbay whipped in a lovely freekick and Willi Orban was the man to meet the cross, luckily for Leipzig he could only head over.
RB Leipzig were reduced to ten men and they will feel angry about the decision as it seemed to be a harsh one, Forsberg and Stöger pushed against each other before Rodnei brought the latter down, despite it being a soft push Forsbger was given a second yellow much to his disgust.
The last chance of the game was perhaps the best chance of them all. Ring burst free into the area after a few combinations and unfortunately the Finnish winger couldn't convert as Coltori rushed out to save. The youngster knew how important that miss was and he wasn't happy with himself after the final whistle.
Kaiserslautern were unable to capitalise on Darmstadt and Karlsruher's dropped points, however they still regain their second place as they go one point ahead. Up next for them they face Bochum and RB Leipzig face St. Pauli after moving up to fifth thanks to goal difference.
