FC Schalke 04 have released both Kevin Prince-Boateng and Sidney Sam.

The news was announced today on Twitter by the club following the 2-0 defeat to 1.FC Köln on Sunday.

Boateng, 28, played 59 minutes in the defeat but Sam wasn't involved due to injury.

Midfielder Marco Hoger has also been suspended for a week.

A statement was released by the club: "Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt announced there would be consequences after Sunday's defeat away to Cologne and the first action taken has been: Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam have been suspended with immediate effect.

"Marco Hoger is suspended from training and first-team action up to and including Saturday, 16 May."

Boateng who joined from AC Milan in 2013 still had a year left on his contract and Sam, 27, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, had a contract until 2018. However, both players are now free to find a new club.

Sunday's defeat was described by Schalke midfielder Julian Draxler as one the side’s ‘worst performances in recent years’ and sporting director Horst Heldt announced there would be consequences.

Schalke are now 13 points behind fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen and in danger of missing out on European football next season after the defeat.
