Mario Mandzukic is in talks with Wolfsburg over a potential return from Atletico Madrid, according to Sky Sports.

Mandzukic played for the Wolves for two years between 2010 and 2012, catching the eye of Bayern Munich in the process, who proceeded to snap him up for two seasons of their own before the Croatian opted for a move to Spain.

The 29-year-old signed a four-year deal with Athletico Madrid, the then Spanish champions, last July, but things have not worked out and now reports suggest that he is hoping for a move back to Germany, where he has excelled in recent years.

Twenty goals in 42 games is hardly a poor return for the Croatian in his first La Liga season, but he certainly did not hit the heights he managed with Bayern Munich, that much is for sure.

Mandzukic's target man stature did not suit Atletico's playing style as much as they would have hoped either, and thus it is likely that they are also wanting to offload the striker and use the money he attracts to recruit a better fit up front this summer.

The striker netted 20 goals in 60 games for Wolfsburg during his two years with the club, but it was his 48 finishes in 88 games for Bayern Munich that made him one of the deadliest forwards in Germany.

The arrival of Robert Lewandowski from Borussia Dortmund, however, threatened to reduce Mandzukic's playing time with the German giants and therefore he opted for a move elsewhere.

Nonetheless, a return to comfortable and familiar surroundings in the Bundesliga can help him rediscover his deadly form as Wolfsburg search for players who can help them mount an even bigger challenge for Bayern's throne this coming season.
