Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of goalkeeper Roman Bürki from SC Freiburg.

Bürki impressed for Freiburg last season, which caught the eye of Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel. Bürki, who has made two appearances for the Switzerland national team, played all 34 of Freiburg’s Bundesliga games last season but couldn’t prevent the club’s relegation on the final day.

Weidenfeller's future with BVB remains unclear

With the signing of the Swiss 'keeper, the future of Roman Weidenfeller is under speculation as the 34-year-old has only one year remaining on his current contract. They also have Mitchell Langerak who played for Dortmund throughout the DFB-Pokal campaign, helping them to reach the final.

Speaking about his current contract situation, Weidenfeller told Bild: "First of all I'm going on vacation".  "I have a contract at Borussia Dortmund until 2016. As things stand, I'll see out my contract."

Dortmund did not disclose the length of Bürki’s contract or the transfer fee going to Freiburg, although reports suggest the fee was around the €3.5 million mark.

This is Tuchel's third signing of the summer after the additions of Gonzalo Castro and Julian Weigl from Bayer Leverkusen and 1860 München respectively.

Bürki's background - will he be the new number one?

Bürki began his career at Young boys before loan spells at FC Thun, FC Schaffhausen and Grasshopper. He then made to the move to Freiburg in May 2014, where he made 33 appearances. Although Freiburg were relegated, Bürki kept nine clean sheets in 34 matches. In his debut season in the Bundesliga, he impressed many, which is why Dortmund decided to trigger his buy-out clause in his contract, which as mentioned earlier, is thought to be around €3.5 million.

Tuchel may look to strengthen the side further as they look to improve on a disappointing season, finishing seventh in the Bundesliga.
