19-year old Alexander Brunst, who has played for Hamburger SV since 2008, joined VfL Wolfsburg on a deal through until June 2017. There is no information in regards to the transfer fee.

For Hamburg's U23 squad, he made 24 appearances last season and conceded 27 goals. In the Bundesliga he sat on the bench 16 times, yet he didn't make it onto the pitch once.

The transfer to VfL Wolfsburg was hinted by Joe Zinnbauer, the coach of Hamburg's U23. During an interview with the "Hamburger Abendblatt", he answered the question as to whether the Lower Saxony club are more attractive than HSV: "If Wolfsburg came calling, then we can do nothing." Zinnbauer said it was the "same with RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen".

Coach and sporting director of U23 are delighted

Wolfsburg's U23-coach and ex-Bundesliga player, Valerien Ismael, is happy about the new arrival and said that, "Brunst is a young goalkeeper with perspective and he attracted attention with good and consistent performances in the Regionalliga Nord." He believes Brunst's "experience and quality" will help his side.

The sporting director of Wolfsburg's U23, Pablo Thiam, is also pleased about the new transfer and declared, "Brunst fits in Wolfsburg's profile." Thiam said that Brunst is "very talented, ambitious and he brings a lot of experience to Wolfsburg, despite of his young age."

He is also believes that "the squad will profit from Brunst's experiences", and that the goalkeeper "can make the next step" at Wolfsburg.

Tom Mickel is on trial and could replace Brunst

A possible replacement for Brunst could be an old acquaintance, Tom Mickel. He played for Hamburg between 2009 and 2013 and made 64 appearances for the reserves.

He is actually flying with the HSV squad to the training camp in Graubünden, Switzerland. He will complete there a trial session and could officially join Hamburg after the one-week training camp.

If he were to join, he would possibly take the status of the third-choice goalkeeper. Brunst held this position, but was used more by the second side. Mickel would, however, also be an alternative for the first team.
