On Sunday, RB Leipzig announced that their sporting director and head coach, Ralf Rangnick, had signed a contract extension through to 2019.

Rangnick is also the sporting director at sister-club Red Bull Salzburg, and was a key figure in their recent dominance of the Austrian Bundesliga.

Rangnick has been behind big-name signings in Leipzig

His recent reign at RB Leipzig has seen similar high-profile signings made. Marcel Sabitzer, Massimo Bruno and Davie Selke, go name but a few, have been big name arrivals into the Red Bull Arena since he took over.

The link has proved to be very useful, and controversial for both - especially for the 2. Bundesliga side. The former Schalke 04 boss took further control of the club this summer, when he was appointed as the manager in Saxony.

His aim, and clearly that of the Bulls, is to reach the Bundesliga this summer. The much-maligned rise seems unstoppable, unless they hit a snag in earning their license for the top division - should they reach the goal.

Mintzlaff has his say on behalf of the board

Olivier Mintzlaff, chairman of the RB Leipzig board, released this statement after the decision was made:

"We are proud that we can continue the way we adopted three years ago with Ralf Rangnick.

"We are a modern organisation that is defined in a sporting sense by Ralf Rangnick and his team.

"This premature contract extension means we, at RB Leipzig, can continue sustainable structures and a very clear transfer and match philosophy, based on young players who we can develop.

"We are very please with the continued co-operation."

The 57-year-old will look to get his tenure off to the best possible start this coming weekend, when they take on FSV Frankfurt in their first game of the 2. Bundesliga season.
