Bayern Munich came from behind to secure all three points at the Allianz Arena, in what was a thrilling match.

In what was their toughest test of the season so far, Bayern passed it with flying colours as they dispatched Bayer Leverkusen 3-0. Pep Guardiola went for a slightly more orthodox formation than that which triumphed against their title rivals. He switched to a 4-2-3-1 but made just two changes, as the injured Arjen Robben was replaced by Jerome Boateng to facilitate the change in tactic. Rafinha also came in for Juan Bernat.

Augsburg's start to the campaign was a far cry from that which secured UEFA Europa League qualification last term. Markus Weinzierl's men were yet to pick up three points after three games, but still kept faith in a largely similar starting line-up to that which lost to FC Ingolstadt 04 before the break. Philipp Max, Halil Altintop, Jeong-Ho Hong and Caiuby dropped out, allowing Markus Feulner, Alexander Esswein, Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker and Ja-Cheol Koo to showcase their talents from the start.

Strong start from Bayern

Bayern, as expected, were dominant from the start. They nearly took the lead in the early stages through Thomas Müller but he just failed to connect with Robert Lewandowski's clever flick on at the near post. Müller tried his luck against from range after Tobias Werner's header went well off target, only to see it fly well over.

The Bavarians went closer still moments later after David Alaba drove down the left and whipped in an excellent ball towards Thiago. The Spanish midfielder timed his run perfectly and met the ball with great gusto, only to see Marwin Hitz stick out a hand and produce a quite fantastic save. Paul Verhaegh wonderful delivery from the right almost found Werner at the far post, in what was the first real signal of intent from the visitors.

Bayern's onslaught was quite incredible, especially from out-wide. Douglas Costa and Philipp Lahm were creating havoc on the right, while Alaba had already shown his crossing ability earlier in the game. No-one could get on the end of their tantalising crosses, however, that dominance would be broken by a special strike from Augsburg.

Augsburg shock the Allianz

Some quick passing play down the right hand side allowed Caiuby to feed Raul Bobadilla, who then cut the ball back towards the edge of the box. The Brazilian forward jumped over the ball and for good reason. Alexander Esswein was on the edge of the box and bulleted a half-volley into the roof of the net, with Manuel Neuer well-beaten by the sensational strike.

Unsurprisingly, Bayern came out in search of a goal after the break and should have got it within a few minutes of the restart. Some lovely play by Lewandowski lost his man, though Hitz was there to save. Thiago had a better chance soon after but blazed over the bar after a corner had bounced to his feet.

In what seemed like an eternity, Augsburg finally managed to break free of the Bayern dominance and put together an attack of their own. Unfortunately, Bobadilla didn't spot those runners on the break and wasted the opportunity. Meanwhile, Hitz was constantly being forced into save after save by the home side.

Bayern level up the game before winning it late on

However, he couldn't prevent Bayern from scoring for the entire 90 minutes. Robert Lewandowski was the man that pounced on Douglas Costa's effort, after Hitz had made another good stop. He was crest-fallen but the move and the champions' play throughout deserved an equaliser at least.

It looked like Augsburg would hold on to their point but Bayern were controversially awarded a penalty in the last minute. Costa collided with Feulner, though the FCA defender had nowhere to go and furiously protested with the linesman. Despite that, Müller dispatched the penalty to seal three deserved points. However, it didn't come without controversy.
