Despite their best efforts to find a goal, both Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt were unable to break the deadlock at the Commerzbank Arena.

Eintracht opted for three alterations following their triumph over Hannover 96. Constant Djakpa, Stefan Reinartz and Marco Russ dropped out of the side, as Slobodan Medojevic, Aleksandar Ignjovski and David Abraham started the game. Bayern made two changes from their last Bundesliga outing against 1. FC Köln, bringing in Javi Martinez and Xabi Alonso for David Alaba and Thomas Müller.

Staunch defensive display from the hosts

The visitors, unsurprisingly, started strongest and were dominating the opening exchanges. Lukas Hradecky was busy from the get-go and he confidently dealt with a few promising crosses. He had to make a more vital intervention moments later, doing brilliantly to hook Arturo Vidal's header over the bar from close range.

Aside from that chance and Stefan Aigner's booking in the 20th second of the match, it was a more than staunch defensive performance from the hosts. They were sitting deep and only pressed Bayern when they got into their half of the pitch, but it was most definitely working.

Armin Veh's plan almost fell apart when Javi Martinez rose above a very deep Frankfurt back-line from a free-kick. The Spaniard wasn't challenged in the air and narrowly headed past the far post. The Eagles were having a really tough time trying to get out of their own half, never mind making any headway going forward. A rare corner was well cleared by the Bayern defence, ending their momentary respite.

The Bavarians were beginning to get frustrated and a series of dribbles and poor passes were easily cut out. Frankfurt managed to reach half-time with their cleansheet still in tact, a rather impressive feat given Bayern's dominance this season.

Frankfurt threaten, Bayern are held

All that hard work was almost wiped out at the beginning of the second half, when a comedy of errors ended up with Makoto Hasebe trying - and failing - to clear the ball. Douglas Costa gambled and got hold of possession, only for Hradecky to make another vital stop with his legs.

Frankfurt then came back with some entertaining attacking play. They almost went ahead after Vidal flicked the ball just past his own post, and came closer still after a mistake from Manuel Neuer. He sliced a clearance straight to Marc Stendera, but recovered well to stop the youngster's volley.

Robert Lewandowski had been unusually quiet during the first hour, but very nearly popped up with a crucial goal. His header zipped just past the post, while Thiago almost grabbed an assist just moments after coming on, though the Pole couldn't apply the necessary finish.

Meier and Lewandowski traded late headers, Arjen Robben was booked for diving and then Bayern had a goal ruled out for offside. It was marginal, but the correct call against Lewandowski. That was all she wrote and Daniel Siebert blew for full-time with the teams locked at nil-nil. Frankfurt became the first side to take points from Bayern in domestic play, giving Borussia Dortmund the chance to cut the gap at the top tomorrow.
