Michael Frontzeck has quit his role as manager of Hannover 96.

Frontzeck was the hero of last season, saving the club from relegation after coming in with five games remaining, but he has endured a horror start to the new campaign, leading to his resignation.

In a statement, the 51-year-old revealed he felt he didn't "have the support anymore" from the club, which made up his mind as he decided to leave the struggling outfit as the winter break begins.

The club have not named his successor, but will at least be given the advantage of searching for one without upcoming fixtures to worry about now as the players prepare for the Christmas festivities.

Disappointing start

Frontzeck leaves Hannover managerless and second-from-bottom in the Bundesliga standings as the winter break begins.

The team's latest defeat, a 1-0 loss at the hands of champions and leaders Bayern Munich, proved to be his final game, with the club having racked up just 14 points from their opening 17 fixtures - losing eight of their last 10 games.

Hannover's narrow defeat to Bayern at the weekend means they have won just two of their last 10 games.

With star man Hiroshi Kiyotake injured, things have been particularly difficult, and the fans will be thankful towards their coach as he chooses to step down from his position in order to help their fortunes change for the better.

Frontzeck bitter about lack of support

However, despite making the decision for the good of the team, this is not to say Frontzeck was not frustrated at leaving Hannover, feeling that he was almost forced to do so as he could not achieve anything without full support from the club.

"I don't feel I have the support anymore," the former FC St. Pauli manager revealed as he left the HDI-Arena.

He continued, adding that the only reason why Hannover survived the drop under his charge last season was because the club "all joined forces and everybody supported the team," as well as supporting "the coaching staff."

However, with this lacking in the current campaign, Frontzeck does not believe that he can help them achieve "something great" - which would be recovering from a very poor start.
