Ahead of the Winter Break training camp, Werder Bremen have announced several changes to their squad. Manjou Wilde returns after a short spell away and joins Mona Lohmann as a new arrival. However, Lisa-Maria Weinert and Venus El-Kassem have departed on personal grounds.

Hoping to make amends for a poor start

The Northerners currently sit second bottom of the Frauen-Bundesliga table, just one point off the bottom.

A lack of goals and a leaky defence have made for a fairly poor combination for both themselves and 1. FC Köln, who are set to be relegated straight back to the second division.

However, with a good break behind them and plenty of time to put in the hard yards before a return to action, Steffen Rau's side have not lost all hope of avoiding the drop.

Welcome back Wilde

One massive plus is the return of under-20 World Cup winner and star-turn, Manjou Wilde. Both club and player will be hoping to pick up where they left off.

The 20-year-old midfielder left Bremen back in 2014 - a season after she was named Player of the Year at the club - to join SC Freiburg.

Despite all signs pointing to a positive move, things haven't gone to plan and Wilde is now back where it all began.

Lohmann signed up

Mona Lohmann is another former Freiburg player although she has arrived from Norwegian side, Amazon Grimstad FK.

Another midfielder, the 23-year-old played nearly 50 times for the Schwarzwald side and will no doubt become an important part of Rau's side.

Both Lohmann and Wilde will not have to wait long to get a crack at their former employers, as they face Freiburg in the fourth game of 2016.

Weinert and El-Kassem depart

It has not all been arrivals, though. Both Lisa-Maria Weinert and Venus El-Kassem have left the club after just half a year.

Head of women's football, Birte Brüggemann said that the club were "naturally disappointed" that their moves didn't work out but wished them the best.

The two players, who were not involved with any regularity whatsoever during the season, have left due to personal reasons.
