Wolfsburg and Netherlands striker Bas Dost has been sidelined for over a month with a broken bone in his foot while training with his team in Portugal.

Dost suffered the injury while fighting for the ball with teammate Dante and with a team-high seven goals in the first half of the season, the injury comes as a huge blow. Wolfsburg are expected to be without their Dutch striker until March, missing key games against Schalke and Bayern Munich.

Big blow for the Wolves

The club's official website stated that Dost may need surgery and will miss a minimum of six weeks.

The German side may be forced into looking for a new frontman during the January transfer window as they are thin at the striker position. Nicklas Bendtner is set to remain at the club and with a Champions League knockout tie with Belgian side Gent, the Bundesliga club will need another attacking option brought in.

Both Bendtner and Dost's futures have become shrouded in recent weeks as they've been linked with moves away from the Volkswagen Arena but the recent injury is likely to keep the duo around.

A need for a new forward?

Wolfsburg return to Bundesliga action on January 24th with an away trip to face Eintracht Frankfurt. A disappointing first half of the season has left the club in seventh on 26 points but they remain in touching distance of fourth place.

Dost enjoyed a breakout season last year and despite scoring seven times this season, the Dutchman failed to start in the last four games of 2015. Facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Bas Dost may fall more out of favour with the German side and could see his time in Wolfsburg come to an end this summer, unless he was to fight his way back into the starting eleven after returning from his broken foot.
