Despite the best efforts of both sides to secure three points on Saturday, FC Augsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt could not be separated. Marwin Hitz came up trumps in the second half to secure a point for the hosts.

First-half lacks action

Both teams made just one change from their last game. The influential Caiuby was suspended for Markus Weinzierl's side and was replaced by Ji-Dong Won, while Armin Veh opted for Marco Fabian in place of Haris Seferovic.

Neither player were able to make much of a difference early on, with the pair of central midfielders on either side cutting out any potential attacks. While it had been turgid for 20 minutes, a quick counter-attack sprung the game into life. Ji, amongst others, was involved but Daniel Baier couldn't make the most of the chance, shooting straight at Lukas Hradecky.

Stefan Aigner had a few half chances immediately after but the clash turned into the same style of play that went before Baier's effort. The major moment of the half was a booking for the experienced Augsburg midfielder, meaning he would miss their next game against FC Ingolstadt 04 next weekend.

Hitz the hero

After Raul Bobadilla and Alexander Esswein got involved for the first real time, where the latter shot over the bar, Frankfurt took the game under their control and began to attack with the purpose and pace that had been lacking in the opening period.

The first meaningful shot came from Alexander Meier and a powerful close range effort. His header was, somehow, turned over by Hitz's incredible reflexes. The Eagles came forward again and Aigner was again denied by Augsburg's Swiss stopper.

Szabolcs Huszti was the third and final player to be thwarted by Hitz, as Augsburg maintain their unbeaten run with a slightly-fortunate draw. The two teams remain on 21 points, seven clear of the relegation zone, and will be hoping to widen the gap between themselves and the bottom two in the coming weeks.
